UNCHARTED DREAMS
He never traveled, at least not in the way others did. No trains, no ships, no long roads stretching impossibly into the sunset of a foreign land. Instead, the cartographer slept.
Each night, mind aloft in the thousands of stars above him, he drifted into territories that no atlas ever showed. Coastlines curving against the hug of the ocean, forests sticky and thick with fig trees, and quiet rooms where steam from hot, black tea tendrils out through the open window into the cool air. By morning, he would wake with ink-stained hands and begin the careful work of translation. Dream into line, memory into measurements.
Some said his maps were a fantasy, that no such places existed. They knew not of where spice hung in the air like prophesy, where the ground exhaled root-deep memory as old as time. “If you look closely,” he would tell them, “you can feel it: the sunlit curl of smoke, the hush of cedar, the soft pull of somewhere just beyond waking.”
You remember this place, even though you have never been.
